Module 4: Soft skills

Learning objectives

 

  • This module introduces the core soft skills that underpin financial adviser relationships, including emotional intelligence, empathy, active listening, behavioural coaching, and techniques for managing difficult conversations. We explore how advisers can use these skills to strengthen trust, support clearer decision‑making and guide clients through emotionally charged moments.

 

 

 

Learning outcomes

After completing this module, you will:

  • Understand the importance of emotional intelligence and how emotions shape client decision‑making.
  • Be able to apply empathy and active listening with clients to build trust and deepen conversations.
  • Use behavioural coaching techniques to help clients manage emotions, biases and stay focused on their long‑term goals.
  • Learn how to navigate difficult and sensitive conversations with curiosity, validation and emotional steadiness—integrating soft‑skill capabilities to deliver more supportive financial advice to clients.

Vanguard Head of Behavioural Economics Research

Andy Reed, Ph.D., is Head of Behavioural Economics Research in Vanguard's Investment Strategy Group. He leads a global team of behavioural scientists who study how investors think, feel and make decisions — and how these choices are shaped by emotions, cognitive processes, behavioural biases and risk preferences.

Before joining Vanguard, Andy was a Vice President at Fidelity, where he established a behavioural economics practice. Previously, he was an associate research scientist at Columbia University and a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University. Andy earned a Bachelor’s degree in history and psychology from Swarthmore College and a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in developmental psychology from Cornell University.

Chuck Riley, CFP®, CTFA

Senior Wealth Adviser

Chuck joined Vanguard in 1998 and is a Senior Wealth Adviser in Vanguard’s Personal Investor Wealth Management group. 

Chuck is passionate about his role as an adviser, particularly in relation to the psychology of money. He enjoys helping align his clients' financial plans with their personal goals, giving them the greatest chance of achieving their desired outcomes.

Chuck holds both the Certified Financial Planner® and Certified Trust and Financial Adviser designations, as well as a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington and an MBA with a concentration in behavioural finance and financial psychology from Creighton University.

Alison W. Kerber, CFP®, CTFA

Senior Wealth Adviser

Having joined Vanguard in 2018, Alison advises clients as a Senior Wealth Adviser in Vanguard’s Personal Adviser Wealth Management group. She is passionate about financial planning and understanding the emotional relationship that clients have with money. 

Alison holds the Certified Financial Planner® and Certified Trust and Financial Adviser professional designations. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Temple University and a Master’s degree in Personal Financial Planning with a concentration in Financial Therapy from Kansas State University.

Sara Smyth, CFP® + ' ' + Senior Wealth Adviser
Sara Smyth, CFP®

Senior Wealth Adviser

Sara Smyth is a Senior Wealth Adviser in Vanguard’s Personal Investor Wealth Management group. She began her financial services career at Vanguard in 2010, working with corporate retirement plan participants and executives, and has been providing advisory services to clients since 2014.

Sara is a Certified Financial Planner™. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Smith College, where her studies in women and financial independence helped shaped her commitment to developing thoughtful, long-term financial plans with individual clients.
